Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, has urged Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi that the Los Blancos, Blaugrana and La Liga would want him to stay at Camp Nou amid interest from Manchester City.

Ramos also said that Messi has earned the respect to decide his future at Barcelona.

Barcelona is presently battling to keep Messi as the forward pushes for a free transfer to reunite with his former coach, Pep Guardiola, at Man City.

Messi’s release clause will have to be paid if he is to leave Barcelona this summer transfer window.

The Argentine international believes he is no longer an employee of Barcelona, but the Catalan club board insist he is still their captain.

Messi, who has played for Barca for almost 20 years, informed the La Liga giants last week of his intentions to leave.

The 33-year-old missed Barcelona’s training on Monday and Tuesday as he no longer considers himself a part of Ronald Koeman’s squad.

Messi’s father and representative, Jorge, arrived at Barcelona on Wednesday to meet with the Barcelona chiefs, including, President Josep Maria Bartomeu to discuss his son’s future

Reacting to the development, Ramos said in a news conference ahead of Spain’s UEFA Nations League game with Germany on Thursday, “I think [Messi] has earned the respect to decide his future.

“I do not know if he is doing it in the best way. But of course, for Spanish football, for Barcelona and for us, we always like to win being the best. We would like him to stay here.

“Leo makes the Spanish league better, he makes his team better, and he makes the Clasico more attractive.

“We like to win with the best there, and he’s one of the best in the world. There is not much to add, he has won the respect to decide his future, him alone, without any speculation at all. Let’s see what happens.”
